This intricate trio offers detail and versatility.
As a combination on the patio in pots, in a courtyard garden or as a focal point under a larger tree these three offer the essence of spring.
Weeping Japanese Maple
With such a reliable display of foliage colour this maple has won awards. A small ornamental tree with purple cut leaf foliage that emerges a striking plum red and in autumn the feathery leaves turn vivid scarlet red. Have you ever noticed maples do have flowers? They are emerging now as pendulous petite wing-like clusters.
Ideal as a focal point in a small garden, Acer palmatum 'Inaba-shidare' can also be pot grown and makes a great patio tree. As with all Japanese maple trees, this purple leaved variety prefers a slightly sheltered position avoiding full, south facing sun where possible.
Pieris japonica 'Sarabande'
Well-known for its gorgeous foliage and flowers; native to the mountain thickets of eastern China, Taiwan, and Japan. This 1m tall cultivar of the "Lily-of-the-Valley" bush is a smaller growing Pieris and useful as a border plant. The new foliage is bronze coloured in spring, maturing to dark green for the remainder of the year.
This shrub blooms in spring to reveal white, urn-shaped flowers that make a pretty show. Thrives in a sheltered position with full sun to partial shade.
AZALEA 'MRS KINT'
‘Mrs. Kint’ is a classic Kurume that is compact and small to 1m. It has a profusion of small, coral-pink, double-blooms that are on display in spring and also again through autumn and winter. Flowers sit amongst beautiful, fine, dark green glossy foliage. A part shade position is ideal but will tolerate full sun if well watered through summer.
