Grow in a warm, humid site with bright light but no direct sun. requires well drained soil that is moist over the warmer months and drier in winter. Liquid fertilise during the growing season.
We have paired the calathea in a pink bella tub as the colour and plain nature of the pot make the patterns on the plant folige pop!
Myoga buds are prized additions to tempura, stir fry and miso soup. They have a delicate flavour and soft pink colour. The young growing stems are also harvested in early spring but it is the young flowers buds in mid summer that are the real aim. The buds can be grated as a garnish, pickled whole or sliced and added to miso soup.
Prefers moist but well drained soil in a semi shade position with morning sun. Foliage dies off in winter and new shoots come through in ealry spring with flower shoots in late spring. Harvest both just as the tips emerge. Performs best if grown in 10cm of mulch. Note, Plant parts other than young tips are toxic and should not be eaten.
