Pieris Japonica 'Temple Bells'

Also known as Lily of the Valley Plant, this small evergreen shrub has a showy display of large, creamy white, bell-shaped flowers in late spring. New foliage is light green, becoming reddish bronze and maturing to a deep emerald green. Ideal as a specimen plant or planted en-masse in beds and borders. Also makes an attractive container plant. Prefers a partly shaded position in moist, well drained soil.  Prune for shape after flowering. Likes a slightly acidic soil so feed with Azalea & Camellia Fertiliser. Mulch well and keep moist through summer.

"I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains, of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains. I love Her far horizons, I love Her jewel-sea, Her beauty and her terror-the wide brown land for me!"
- Dorothea MacKellar.

While some of us are jetting off overseas the first chance we could get, I'm drawn to our beautiful outback with the Kimberly in WA on my bucket list. I was very lucky to experience the beautiful landscapes between Port Augusta, Katherine, Broome & Darwin.
As we drove almost 10,000km in the BT50 ute and a couple of double swags, my family realised we are the exception to the rule with most in expensive 4WD rigs and fancy caravans. We like to keep it simple and fuel efficient and could not have been happier.
WOW nature is a wonderful teacher. I was thrilled to see so may wildflowers as I wasn't expecting so many in July. We discovered many beautiful Yellow Wattles (Acacia) and I found the ever reliable mauve  Brachyscome in Central Australia. I didnt realise that Tibouchina is an Australia Native. We discovered  this petite purple Tibouchina at Emma Gorge and a number of other places in remote parts of the Kimberly. Inspired by my travels we have in this week's trio to celebrate our wonderful native flora

Stromanthe Sanguinea is a tall growing indoor plant with quite long dark green leaves featuring a very light green stripe up the middle and gorgeous burgundy undersides. Position in a light room away from direct sun. Allow soil to dry out slightly between watering. Water more during summer and apply liquid food throughout the warmer months.

Pink Rosemary
Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Portuguese pink’

An upright shrub with deep grey green leaves and soft pink flowers, and the classic aromatic foliage.

Rosemary is a great traditional herb that can be used in a myriad of foods and cooking styles. It is also a really good plant for aiding your health. It helps with digestion and organ function and is high in antioxidants. It is also high in Vitamin E and is reputed to aid in relaxation and assist in prolonging a good memory. Steep with sage leaves and then add fennel seed for a savoury type tea that will help with general health.

Plant in any well drained to general soil in a sunny and airy position. Good for hedging, topiary and large pots. Best planted in a full sun position for a full bushy look.

Regular applications of Maxicrop will aid in the plants development .
If Rosemary is too large, do a hard prune in mid autumn.

Bamboo & Timber Hardwood Stakes

With gusts of wind this week over 60kph, now is the perfect time to protect your trees and shrubs from Melbourne's wild spring wind.

Bamboo is an economical and strong staking option for shrubs and softer annual vines like sweet and snow peas. Use three stakes tied together at one end as a teepee to protect your plants from all sides.

Hardwood timber is extremely strong and can help support even large trees. Three stakes surrounding a trunk with lines of soft garden tie to secure is a great way to help trees and shrubs establish a stong root system and straight trunk.
