Place in a bright luminescent area away from direct sun rays to avoid the leaf burn in hot weather. Check water twice a week by feeling the top of the soil for moisture. If you feel moisture, leave it for now. When almost dry the size of the pot will determine how much water you need to give. Enough water to cover the top of the pot is ideal. Never sit in a tray of water. ApplyB-Green Fertilizer twice a year in spring and autumn. A monthly application of Maxicrop Indoor Plant Food will re-invigorate leaves and roots to rejuvenate growth.
A popular variety that is early to mature and provides an abundance of delicious shelling peas on compact plants. The pods are well-filled with wonderfully sweet peas that are rich in Vitamin A, C and folate. This cool season crop suits a range of growing conditions, and is particularly well suited for smaller gardens.
Since peas like slightly alkaline soil, it’s best to prepare the soil a few weeks before planting seedlings by adding a small amount of dolomite or garden lime to the soil, along with some compost or a balanced fertiliser. Mix in some compost to improve drainage if the soil is compacted, as peas don’t like ‘wet feet’, better known as waterlogged roots.
When plants start growing, they will need watering. As peas are susceptible to powdery mildew, it is best to water them early in the day and to water the soil near their roots, without wetting their leaves.
Peas taste best when harvested fairly young. If left too long to mature, edible pea pods may need to be de-stringed by removing the stringy fibres from the top seam of the pod. Snap off the stem end of the pea toward the top seam and pull away the attached stringy part to remove it.
Apart from the usual benefits of mulching, such as retaining soil moisture and keeping weeds at bay, straw mulches are fantastic for boosting the quality, water holding capacity and nutrition of your soil. Lucerne is rich in potassium, calcium, iron and folic acid. It also increases the nitrogen in the soil. It is the quickest mulch to break down and improve the soil and would benefit from reapplication every six months. Lucerne is a great mulch to use in your veggie garden this Summer!
