Well even in the hottest driest parts of Western Australia you can find the most delicate of ferns. It’s all about the microclimate. At Fern Pool and Fortescue Falls
Maiden hair ferns Maidenhair ferns Adiantum pedatum take advantage of the warm bright indirect light and water. They have year-round water in the Dales Gorge area of Karijini National Park in the remote Pilbara of WA.
Fortescue Falls is the only spring-fed waterfall in Karijini and a short walk upstream brings you to to Fern Pool with its small twin waterfalls where you can feel the warmth of the spring water on the right hand side of the cascade. The cascades create a humidity even in the dry season of winter. So can you create a similar environment at home?? You sure can!
Maidenhair Ferns are available in many different species and are native to Australian and other parts of the world. We often have in store Adiantum fragrans with its gorgeous fine, green foliage on wiry dark almost-black stems. Maidenhairs like to be kept moist but not wet, and they do not like being dry. Perfect for a warm bright room indoors out of direct midday or afternoon sun. Create humidity by placing a tray of water underneath the pot and fill it to 1cm of water.
Don't worry though, if it ever dries out and dies back it is OK! Cut back to about 2cm from the base and give it a good soak. Use some Maxicrop fertiliser and just wait, it will start to send up new fronds in a few weeks.

Kalanchoe 'Quick Silver' A Succulent Gift Idea Kalanchoe Quicksilver is a unique and eye-catching variety of Kalanchoe. It is known for its striking silvery-blue leaves, which set it apart from other Kalanchoe species. The leaves have a velvety texture, adding to the plant's overall appeal. As with most Kalanchoe plants, Quicksilver is relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in well-draining soil and bright, indirect light. It is a popular choice for indoor plant enthusiasts, but it can also be grown outdoors in mild climates as a charming addition to rock gardens or succulent displays.
Flowers are pink and plentiful.
Devils Ivy are a must-have indoor plant! Allow them to climb up a trellis or pole, or trail from a shelf or hanging pot! Their heart-shaped green leaves produce yellow variegation. In a bright room the Devils Ivy will produce more yellow variegation, and in lower light conditions the foliage will be more green. They are super hardy and dry tolerant. Allow soil to dry slightly between watering. Water weekly to fortnightly (or even less!) in winter and check for watering more often in the warmer months. Fertilise with Maxicrop in the warmer months to boost growth.
Devils Ivy's foliage pairs perfectly with the natural-toned Lyla Pot. Great for a bedside table or desk, or remove the trellis and allow to trail down from a shelf!
Garlic Garlic is really easy to grow if you plant it at the right time. If you would like a garlic flavour in your cooking all year round you can plant garlic chives as well.
Garlic plants, like onions, prefer a more alkaline soil. Sprinkle some dolomite or garden lime around the area before planting. Single cloves can often form large, single bulbs, called rounds, in their first year. If these are kept and planted out next autumn they will form large, multi-cloved bulbs in their second year
Overfeeding with manures is not recommended as it will encourage rot. You are far better off planting in a soil that was enriched for the crop beforehand. Garlic will really benefit from regular seaweed fertiliser applications (Maxicrop), especially in spring. Keeping the soil evenly moist will aid bulb development, but don’t overwater.
Bulbs develop in spring / summer, and can be harvested on a dry day when the leaves are starting to turn yellow. A tip is to bend the foliage and flower stem to the ground in late spring / summer. This helps to put more energy into the bulb. Dry your garlic and then brush off the excess dirt from it before storage. They look great and store well if you plait the stems together and hang them in a cool, airy spot away from direct sun.
