WINTER WONDERS
EUCALYPTUS CRENULATA
Victorian silver gum, Eucalyptus crenulata will brighten dark corners as it has bushy aromatic silvery blue green foliage. It responds well to coppicing and pollarding and can grow 1-1.5 m per year when well watered. Not many eucalyptus are happy in part sun, but this one is. Young shoots are often a silvery rose colour with white blooms. Glaucous buds, twigs and underside of the leaves give the whole plant a silvery appearance great as foliage for cut flowers.
Spring flowers are creamy white and fluffy with a beautiful sweet perfume

One Tree Per Child
Celebrate the run up to National Tree Day on July 28th by planting a tree with your child!

The aim of One Tree Per Child is to get every child to plant at least one tree before they leave school.
Founded by Olivia Newton-John and Jon Dee, One Tree Per Child has planted trees in 10 countries. We have already planted hundreds of thousands of trees and shrubs.

As a child grows, so does their tree. This connection between the child and their tree leads to increased environmental awareness and care.
Planting a tree is often a child’s first act of volunteering for their community
Tree planting gives children ‘a sense of belonging’. When they’re planting a tree or a shrub, the child is literally putting down roots in their community.
Psychological research shows a correlation between childhood contact with nature and better mental health.
Planting a tree empowers children into realising that they can make a personal difference for wildlife, our soil and the environment.
When a child’s tree grows, it also increases its beneficial contribution to wildlife, our soil and the environment. The tree can also provide shade.

Snow Pea

Snow peas produce flat , wide edible pods that are sweet in flavour and have a crunchy texture .
Peas taste better when harvested fairly young. If left too long to mature, the pea pods may need to be de-stringed by removing the stringy fibres from the top stem of the pod. Snap off the stem end of the pea toward the top seam and pull away the attached stringy part to remove it.

Since peas like a slightly alkaline soil, it’s best to prepare the soil a few weeks before planting seedlings by adding a small amount of dolomite or garden lime, along with compost and fertiliser.

As peas are susceptible to powdery mildew, it’s best to water early in the day and to water the soil near their roots, without wetting their leaves.
