The Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger) and the Lenten Rose (Helleborus x hybridus) are two special plants whose radiant beauty give us more enjoyment than most other winter flowering plants. The cross between the two was quite rare. The first couple were the beautiful pink form, Mme Lemonnier and the stunning white Paradenia. Both combining the vigour of the Orientalis hybrids with the floral beauty and attractive foliage of Helleborus niger. The breeders at Heuger have done it again and produced another stunning cross called Helleborus x glandorfensis. The first collection has been named Ice 'n' Roses.

Ice 'n' Roses is part of a collection of named Helleborus varieties bred for very high quality in appearance and performance. Only about 1 in 100,000 seedlings meet the high standards necessary for possible inclusion in the 'Helleborus Gold Collection'. The Helleborus varieties in the 'Helleborus Gold Collection' are propagated by micropropagation and not by seed. This is the only method of producing plants of the highest possible quality which are consistently true to form.

Ice'n' Roses Picotee is a compact, medium sized plant with masses of flowers in late winter and early spring. It grows to 50cm wide and 40cm tall. It is the first Picotee in Ice 'n' Roses collection. The flowers occur in a central bunch, are outward facing and are a white with a ruby tinge. Helleborus x glandorfensis 'HGC Ice 'n' Roses Picotee' requires little effort to keep it performing and growing well. Give regular feeds with Seasol and PowerFeed from autumn to spring. Remove the spent flowers prior to seed set and trim off any ratty leaves. It is not necessary but will give you a better floral display if most of the leaves are trimmed back during late autumn.

Plant en masse with H. 'Ice Breaker Max' for a mix of colour and form. Helleborus prefer a cool summer position in part to full shade. Plant with Heuchera "Caramel' Geranium 'Rozanhe' and Bergenia 'Bressingham White' to continue this festival of floral magnificence through spring, summer and autumn. Scatter a range of Hosta amongst them to add to the blend of foliage and flower.
