Description
I love a good naming story. Part of the Indian Summer Range, Tuscarora, is named after an Indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands in Canada and the United States. It's the hottest pink of the Crepe Myrtles, so named for the elegant clusters of blooms that resemble crinkled crepe paper which are on display for many summer months.
Swedish botanist Magnus von Lagerström was the first to name this species, giving the botanical name Lagerstroemia. They have dark green leaves emerging in spring that change to warm yellow, orange and red tones in autumn offering enduring Indian Summer colour. Lagerstroemias are also grown for their attractive mottled trunk and peeling cinnamon like bark which is in full display in winter.
