Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula Rubra' (Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula Rubra')
WEEPING CHERRY
Prunus x subhirtella
'Pendula Rubra'
A beautiful, fast growing weeping cherry with masses of pink flowers in spring. Suitable for use as a feature tree in gardens and parks.
Lustrous dark green (smaller than usual for the species), finely serrate margins.
Single pink flowers approx. 1.3 cm diameter, opening early to mid-spring, in two to five flowered umbels before the leaves appear.
Adaptable to a variety of site conditions, but prefers moist, well-drained fertile soil and a position receiving full sun to part-shade. Flowers best in full sun. 5 x 5 metres. The eventual tree height depends (in part) on the height of the 'standard' onto which it is grafted in the nursery. Propagated by Fleming's onto a 'standard' of approximately 1.2 or 'tall' 1.8 metres in height.
