Mum's Favourites !
This week we’re getting ready for Mother’s Day with lots of beautiful things arriving in flower. This trio can be suitable in the garden or given as gifts. They’re so beautiful!

CAMELLIA 'WITH LOVE'

Camellia 'With Love' is early flowering and will flower all autumn long with delicate, soft-pink double flowers and a hint of perfume. Plant habit is elegant, slender and upright. Perfect in pots, excellent for hedging and ideal as a standalone feature plant.

Camellia plants grow best in well-drained soils (for clay soils, mix organic material with the clay soil to improve drainage). After planting, mulch well and water regularly until established. Once established, Camellias are surprisingly drought hardy. Feed with  Azalea & Camellia fertiliser in spring and summer. Lightly prune in early spring for shape, if required.

DICHONDRA 'SILVER FALLS'
Silver Falls is the common name for Dichondra argentea, a low ground cover to 10cm. The name Silver Falls comes from the unique colouring of the leaves, a silvery pale green. It is a wonderful contrasting groundcover plus It is especially popular in hanging baskets because of its trailing foliage and perfect for trailing over the edge of pots. It is fabulous the way it spreads and covers an area vigorously and quickly as well as for its low-maintenance nature.

Martin's Edible Pick of the Week

Kohlrabi Purple
A low stout growing cultivar of the common cabbage that is also known as italian turnip and will grow almost anywhere.

Varies in flavour between nutty when raw  and tastes a bit like broccoli with a hint of radish when cooked. High in Vitamin C and a good source of dietary fibre and potassium. A cup of raw Kohlrabi  has only 36 calories. it is low in saturated fat and cholestrol.

Shred raw bulbs to add crunch to slaws and salads. Also tasty mashed, roasted or sauteed. Leaves can be added to soups. and stews in the last 15 minutes of cooking.
Prefers a sunny position that is moist but not wet. Does'nt like being too wet or too dry. Regular applications of Maxicrop seaweed fertiliser will keep the plant healthy and growing. Remove flower stems as soon as they appear. Pick leaves when young and harvest bulbs after 7-10 weeks.
