Spring Bud Burst  !
What joy! One of the most inspirational times of year when the dormant deciduous trees burst into flower and then leaf for the spring.

PRUNUS CERASIFERA OAKVILLE CRIMSON SPIRE
'Crimson Spire' is a beautiful narrow vase like shaped feature tree, with a purple bark which deepens in colour with age. Leaves are a deep purple in colour with a slight greening colour through the bottom of the leaf. Grows to 6 metres in height and at moderate rate and has an attractive white and dark pink flowers through spring. Great for spring blossom and autumn colour in narrow spaces. We love them so much we have three planted at Botanical Creations

LOROPETALUM 'CHINA PINK'
'China Pink’ offers year round ornamental foliage of deep plum colour accented by red tips of new growth and striking lolly pink, tassel-like flowers produced in spring and again in autumn. With long season of interest it is ideal in mixed boarders and mid level planting in any garden. Grows well in most soils which are well draining. Once established water requirements are low but do not allow to dry out over extended periods of heat. A light trim after flowering will help to maintain a neat, compact shape.

HELLEBORE 'ICE N ROSES MERLOT'
Ice 'n' Roses Merlot is a compact, medium sized plant with masses of flowers in late winter and early spring. The flowers occur in a central bunch, are outward facing and are a rich maroon. Ice 'n' Roses Merlot requires little effort to keep it performing and growing well.. Give regular feeds with Maxicrop from autumn to spring. Remove the spent flowers prior to seed set and trim off any ratty leaves. It is not necessary but will give you a better floral display if most of the leaves are trimmed back during late autumn. Will take full sun in winter but prefers a cooler summer with just part sun making Helleborus ideal for planting under deciduous trees.

Prune after flowering and fertilise with a long term slow release native fertiliser.

Tom's Indoor Pick of the Week!

Calathea 'Rosey' in Pink Floral Pot

One of the most stunning indoor plants, Rosey will do well in indoor gardens and terrariums. Rosey is slow growing and does not require much maintenance so it can be kept small and compact for long periods; Rosey will also do well in pots in most places indoors but requires heating in colder months.

Water well if kept in pots but sparingly in terrariums, potting mix must be allowed to almost dry between watering. Keep in some direct sunlight or provide artificial light. Avoid heaters and drafty positions.
This Calathea is moderately hardy but will not survive in cold climates without heating. Keep on the dryer side in winter.

Martin's Edible Pick of the Week
Bean Bonaparte

Bean Bonaparte is a dwarf French bean which produces high yields of flavoursome, stringless beans.

Beans require full sun  but provide a bit of temporary shade cover in super-hot, dry, windy weather.

Soil for beans should be rich, deep, pH neutral and organic. Compost is perfect for soil preparation. You could also use an organic, complete fertiliser at planting time. Mulching your bed is really important but ensure the mulch doesn’t touch the stems of the beans. Soil needs to be well-drained but note that beans don’t really like sandy soils very much. So improve your sandy soil with Pure Magic Compost.

Feed with a Maxicrop Seaweed Fertiliser at flowering time to promote higher yields of tasty beans!
Harvest can approximately occur between 12 – 14 weeks (10 weeks if you’ve gone the dwarf varieties). Pick bean pods when they are young, tender and at their tastiest. Do this before the seeds have swollen to make the pod lumpy and they’ll taste better. It’s best to harvest manageable numbers of beans regularly as this will promote more flowering and more tasty bean pods.
